Debut album, 'The future isn't what it used to be.,' available now
Apr 21, 2026

Tye Newton's complete 10-song debut album, titled The future isn't what it used to be., is publicly available today. Alongside the public release, the album remains available at its lower, members-only price on the Subvert.fm, where Newton had made it available early to fellow cooperative members for the the platform's private alpha-development phase.

As announced previously, each of the 10 songs was released as a single, one by one, over a five-week period building to the release of the complete album, today.

Self-recorded, -produced, and -mixed in Newton’s Portland, Maine home from late 2021 to early 2025, and mastered by his brother Justin Newton at Jay Song Studio in Cincinnati, the 10-song album represents not only Newton’s first solo release, but also his first since learning to work around the voice limitations of a chronic condition that emerged through the 2010s.

In Newton’s own words,

"The future isn’t what it used to be. tells a half-decade story arc of finding home in another human followed by the traumatic loss of that vital connection. It’s woven with themes of hope, patience, and trust even amidst uncertainty, waves of disillusionment, and the many colors of grief before one can finally begin to heal. It is a deeply personal record, and yet the experiences that inspired it are now distant enough that my relationship to it feels more observational—like relating to someone else’s songs and story.
It’s hard to express my mix of elation and relief to finally complete this collection and release it. I feel most alive making songs from my human experience and it’s good to be back..."

The album can be purchased digitally on various platforms, including Subvert.fm's private alpha platform (at a lower, members-only price, and opening to the public soon) and Bandcamp, and is also available on various streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, YouTube, and many others.

Tenth single, 'Reverie Mourning,' available today
Apr 21, 2026

Tye Newton's tenth single, Reverie Mourning, is available today. It is the final song being released one by one, over a five-week period, completing and coinciding with the release of Newton’s debut album, The future isn’t what it used to be.

Of the song, Newton says:

"In 'Reverie Mourning,' the speaker is in a recurring dream, wherein they relive variations of happy memories with their ex. Attempting in vain to alter the ending, the dream culminates each time with the same nightmarish final moments of the breakup..."
"This one uses another of my favorite alternative-percussion examples in the rhythmic 'micro beats' created by sampling a rubber mallet thumping a rigid-fiber crate. The absence of strings in this song signifies that the speaker is, in fact, alone.
There is no emotional-closure song on this album, which I’ve come to feel is a broadly misunderstood concept. ... To me, these songs depict just the earliest phase of that important emotional processing."

The single can be purchased digitally on various platforms, including Subvert.fm's private alpha platform (opening to the public soon) and Bandcamp, and is also available on various streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, YouTube, and many others.

Ninth single, 'Coal in Hand,' available today
Apr 17, 2026

Tye Newton's ninth single, Coal in Hand, is available today. It is the ninth of 10 songs being released one by one, over a five-week period, building to the complete release of Newton’s debut album, The future isn’t what it used to be., on April 21, 2026.

Newton says:

"The title theme of 'Coal in Hand' references the Buddhist expression that 'holding onto anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intention of throwing it.' In the song, the speaker struggles to move past their shame and anger at a romantic betrayal, fueled by the gossip of past and present communities, newly amplified by revelations about the history of the interloper with whom the former partner is now entangled.
The song has been described to me as having 'good "f***-you" energy,' which seems like a critical element for what is essentially (at least half) a breakup album, though the emotions expressed are actually a lot more complex."

The single can be purchased digitally on various platforms, including Subvert.fm's private alpha platform (where the complete album is already available early, exclusively to cooperative members) and Bandcamp, and is also available on various streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, YouTube, and many others.

Eighth single, 'The Future Isn't What It Used to Be,' available today
Apr 14, 2026

Available now is Tye Newton's eighth single, The Future Isn't What It Used to Be, the title track of his debut album. It is the eighth of 10 songs being released one by one, over a five-week period, building to the complete release of the album, The future isn’t what it used to be., on April 21, 2026.

Newton says:

"The album’s title song, 'The Future Isn’t What It Used to Be,' recounts a failed relationship’s joyful beginnings through a lens of grief and disillusionment—from losing not only a planned future, but also a shared past with someone who seems to have rewritten the story of their own feelings. The final line connects the song back to 'Home (Source and Target)' as the speaker’s sense of home becomes elusive again.
Every song on this record began simply with acoustic guitar and voice, but this is the only one that remained so close to that throughout production, adding only strings and sparse percussion."

Seventh single, 'Lovelorn Lullaby,' available today
Apr 10, 2026

Tye Newton's seventh single, Lovelorn Lulluby, is available today. It is the seventh of 10 songs being released one by one, over a five-week period, building to the complete release of Newton’s debut album, The future isn’t what it used to be., on April 21, 2026.

Newton says:

"'Lovelorn Lullaby' may be the most personally vulnerable song of this record... Battling sleep, unexpectedly alone in the bed they’ve long shared, the speaker is unready to let go of their life together. As they inevitably fall unconscious, they dream of haunting the space with all its associations—simultaneously furnished and empty, lived in and vacant—while reenacting cherished memories and unfulfilled hopes.
The lyrics contain several references to other songs... I like discovering recurring lyrical themes in others’ work; while some might criticize it as self-plagiarism, I find internal referencing often enhances my appreciation of the bigger story."

Sixth single, 'Rally, Love (A Kind of Friendship,' available today
Apr 7, 2026

Available today is Tye Newton's sixth single, Rally, Love (A Kind of Friendship). It is the sixth of 10 songs being released one by one, over a five-week period, building to the complete release of Newton’s debut album, The future isn’t what it used to be., on April 21, 2026.

Newton says:

"The originating idea of 'Rally, Love' comes from a personal reflection on romantic love as a kind of friendship—one without possessiveness or expectation, with the will to love another through wavering doubts, unconditionally. The song, however, contextually subverts the notion, as the speaker tries in vain to rescue the friendship from yet another relationship’s collapse."
"Very much the turning point in the record, 'Rally, Love' brings back the stumbling five-count meter of 'Simple,' but this time pairs it with a minor key, dissonant string sirens, and thunderclaps of violent percussion to convey the nightmarish storm of emotion as one’s personal world rapidly disintegrates."

Round 3: Answers to early listener questions about 'The future isn't what it used to be.'
Apr 6, 2026

Friends, I am happy to report that I managed a quicker turnaround for Round 3 of my responses to early listener questions about my forthcoming album, The future isn't what it used to be. (This is despite that they've each been a bit little longer than the last; I need to work on this!)

Please send me your own thoughts and followup questions (in comments, DMs, email replies, etc.); the door is still open for more questions in future videos.

This is the third of hopefully 10 of these—one for each of the 10 songs on the album. That means this video is loosely associated with track 3, "Happier Words," though we're up to the release of song 5 of 10 at the time of this post. (Song 6 drops at midnight, tonight!)

This time I'm responding to questions about special sounds I use(d), who/what inspired the album, and how I choose titles for songs and albums.

In case you don't already know: I started this series by sharing the entire record early with friends and music enthusiasts I'm connected with, inviting their questions for me to answer to everyone. As I release the album, song by song, I'm still inviting everyone else to share more questions, too. I hope this is a fun way to offer deeper insights about the record that I wouldn't have come up with on my own.

Fifth single, 'Lioness,' available today
Apr 3, 2026

Tye Newton's fifth single, Lioness, is now available. It is the fifth of 10 songs being released one by one, over a five-week period, building to the complete release of Newton’s debut album, The future isn’t what it used to be., on April 21, 2026.

Newton says:

"'Lioness' is a dreamlike sequence through the speaker’s diminishing sense of connection with the person they love—their livelihoods requiring periodically inverse sleep schedules. As they watch over each other in shifts, the speaker strives to maintain balance in their relationship, but is increasingly unable to decipher perceived changes in the mind and heart of their partner.
This song has, I think, a unique tone among its siblings, as well as one of my favorite implementations of the found-percussion sample library I built throughout the recording of the album..."

Fourth single, 'Forever and Anon,' available today
Mar 31, 2026

Available now is Tye Newton's fourth single, Forever and Anon. It is the fourth of 10 songs being released one by one, over a five-week period, building to the complete release of Newton’s debut album, The future isn’t what it used to be., on April 21, 2026.

The single release includes two studio productions of the song: a short-intro cut alongside the full version with the instrumental intro section, which will appear as the fourth track on the album.

Newton says:

"'Forever and Anon' reads like a conversation but is a mostly internal monologue. The speaker is navigating doubts on either side of their romantic relationship, though not always aloud...
I couldn’t have anticipated how much this song would transform in production. It has the spirit of the original scrap that seeded it, but, similar to 'Home,' it surprised me with the way it steered toward typical rock-band instrumentation—despite that, throughout the record, the 'drum kit' is actually made entirely (except the cymbals) from my own found-percussion samples."

Still of Album Q&A Round 2 video
Round 2: Answers to early listener questions about 'The future isn't what it used to be.'
Mar 30, 2026

Hello friends, and thanks again for the positive feedback I've received about Round 1 of my Q&A video series!

It took its time, but I've just published Round 2, responding to more early listener questions about my forthcoming album, The future isn't what it used to be.

For those out of the loop: Having shared the record early with friends and music enthusiasts I'm connected with, I'm continuing my responses to their questions and—as I release the album, song by song—I'm inviting everyone else to share their questions, too. I hope this is a fun way to offer deeper insights about the record that I wouldn't have come up with on my own.

This is just the second of hopefully 10 of these—one for each of the 10 songs on the album. I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up with the pace of the song releases, and that's turning out to be even more true than anticipated. (Song 4 of 10 will release at midnight after I post this!)

Anyway, please do check it out and send me your own thoughts and followup questions by whatever channels we're connected! The door is open to include anyone's questions in future videos.

Third single, 'Happier Words,' available today
Mar 27, 2026

Tye Newton's third single, Happier Words, is available now. It is the third of 10 songs being released one by one, over a five-week period, building to the complete release of Newton’s debut album, The future isn’t what it used to be., on April 21, 2026.

Newton says:

"'Happier Words' must be the most plainly romantic song I’ve made, with the speaker discovering their own contentment to grow old with a romantic partner. In context of the relationship, sad songs that were always a source of consolation for both of them now somehow sound rosier, inspiring lyrical adaptations with happier words.
This song originally had an extended bridge—a 'medley' of quotes from literal favorite sad songs with their words replaced with happy messages. While it was fun to translate everything into major key and waltz meter, ultimately, the song was stronger without it, and it simplified the release by eliminating the question of cover licensing."

The song can be purchased digitally on various platforms, including Subvert.fm's private alpha platform (where the complete album is already available early, exclusively to cooperative members) and Bandcamp, and is also available on various streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, YouTube, and many others.

Second single, 'Simple,' available today
Mar 24, 2026

Available today is Tye Newton's second single, Simple. It is the second of 10 songs being released one by one, over a five-week period, building to the complete release of Newton’s debut album, The future isn’t what it used to be., on April 21, 2026.

Newton says:

"'Simple' recalls the early stages of a relationship that feels too unlikely to trust yet too easy to dismiss. Anticipating future uncertainty, the speaker makes a simple commitment to meet future challenges with steadiness, balance, and clarity.
With its odd, five-beat timing, the music attempts to capture that feeling of stumbling eagerly forward—like a waltz that’s skipping beats—into a promising future.
It’s the one song on the record that was essentially finished during the phase of my life that inspired it. The actual recording and production started years later, but the overall song, instrumentation, and arrangement were already planned."
